The Spanish and Mexican Texans whose ranching culture and revolutionary sacrifice built the Lone Star State before it had a star to call its own.
Tejanos — the community whose origins in the Spanish colonial settlement of Texas beginning with the missions and presidios of the eighteenth century make them the descendants of the Mexican and Spanish-descended people who built the ranching culture, the town life, and the civic institutions of Texas before the Anglo-American immigration of the 1820s and 1830s transformed the demographic and political character of the region, a people whose presence in Texas predates the republic, the state, and the American annexation by generations and whose contribution to the Texas story is inseparable from the land, the cattle, the language, and the cultural traditions that define the Lone Star State's identity to this day. The Tejano world — whose vaquero tradition of horsemanship, cattle driving, and ranching expertise the Anglo-American cowboys who came after them adopted so completely that the entire vocabulary of the American cowboy — lasso, rodeo, corral, bronco, chaps, ranch — is Spanish, the Tejano ranchers' knowledge of the land and the longhorn cattle whose management they had perfected across generations becoming the foundation of the Texas cattle industry whose drives up the Chisholm Trail to the Kansas railheads created the mythology of the American West, whose Tejano fighters at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836 including Juan Seguín and his company of Tejano volunteers fought alongside Travis, Bowie, and Crockett for a Texas independence that would within a decade marginalize and dispossess the very Tejano community whose sacrifice had helped win it, and whose conjunto and norteño musical traditions born from the encounter between the German accordion brought by nineteenth-century immigrant settlers and the Spanish guitar and vocal traditions of the Mexican borderlands created in the music of Lydia Mendoza, Flaco Jiménez, and Selena a Tejano sound of irresistible vitality that became the heartbeat of the Texas-Mexico border world — gave America the soul of the Southwest in a culture of horsemanship, music, faith, and land love that no border ever contained. This interactive t-shirt connects you to that foundational legacy with a QR code linking to the full story.
