The unconquered empire of Michoacán whose copper metallurgy, lake island capital, and unbroken resistance made them the only civilization the Aztec Triple Alliance never defeated.
Purépecha People — the indigenous nation of Michoacán whose Tarascan Empire at its height controlled the lake basin of Pátzcuaro, the volcanic highlands of western Mexico, and a territory whose copper weapons, obsidian trade, and military organization made the Purépecha the only major Mesoamerican power to successfully repel every Aztec invasion, the Triple Alliance's catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Tlaximaloyan in 1479 establishing a frontier between the two empires that neither ever crossed in conquest. The Purépecha world — whose island capital of Tzintzuntzan on Lake Pátzcuaro, the yácatas pyramid temples rising above the lake in the most dramatically situated ceremonial center in western Mexico, remains the heart of Purépecha cultural identity whose Day of the Dead celebration on the lake's island of Janitzio — candlelit canoes crossing the dark water to the cemetery in a vigil of marigold and copal — is the most visually iconic indigenous ceremony in all of Mexico, and whose Purépecha language, unrelated to any other Mexican indigenous language and therefore a linguistic isolate whose origins remain one of Mesoamerica's great mysteries, is spoken today by over one hundred thousand people in the communities of the Michoacán highlands. This interactive sweatshirt connects you to that unconquered and lake legacy with a QR code linking to the full story.
