The forgotten Scandinavian colony whose log cabin legacy became the architecture of the American frontier.

New Sweden — the short-lived but culturally consequential Swedish colonial venture established along the Delaware River valley in 1638 under the leadership of Peter Minuit and the sponsorship of the New Sweden Company, a seventeen-year colonial enterprise that planted on the banks of the Delaware the northernmost outpost of Scandinavian expansion in the age of European colonization and left in the American cultural landscape a legacy whose most visible expression — the log cabin, the Scandinavian building technique of horizontally stacked notched logs that Swedish and Finnish settlers introduced to the Delaware valley and that spread westward with the American frontier to become the most iconic symbol of pioneer settlement in the entire American imagination — belies the brevity and smallness of the colony that introduced it. The New Sweden world — whose settlers drawn from Sweden and Finland established Fort Christina, named for the Swedish queen, on the site of present-day Wilmington, Delaware, and built along the river a string of trading posts and farms whose relations with the Lenape people were notably more peaceful and respectful than those of most European colonial ventures, whose Finnish settlers in particular brought from their forest homeland the woodcraft traditions and log construction techniques that proved so perfectly adapted to the forested American frontier that they spread far beyond the Delaware valley to define the material culture of American pioneer expansion, and whose absorption into New Netherland in 1655 after Dutch Governor Stuyvesant's military takeover ended Swedish colonial ambitions in America while leaving the Swedish and Finnish settlers to continue their lives on the Delaware, their descendants becoming Americans whose Scandinavian heritage quietly shaped the built environment of a continent. This interactive sweatshirt connects you to that quietly transformative legacy with a QR code linking to the full story.
